The Tata Motors India is about to launch their budget hatchback the Tiago shortly. The originally preferred name the ‘Zica’ has been changed to Tata Tiago as the former rhymes with the deadly Zika virus. The car is expected to be a popular vehicle in the entry-level hatchback segment. Tata Motors have roped in the well-known footballer Lionel Messi for their advertisements.
The Tata Motors India Limited has been developing a budget hatchback and a compact sedan for the last couple of years under the code name the ‘Kite’ to replace their aging Indica and the Indigo models. The hatchback expected to be launched during the recently concluded 2016 Indian Auto Show will now be launched on 28th February. The booking for the Tiago has been started on 10th February 2016 for an advance amount of Rupees 10,000.
Variants and prices
The Tiago is expected to have petrol and diesel variants. The transmission will be 5-speed manual initially. The Tiago to be positioned between the Nano and the Bolt will be priced competitively as it will have rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Celerio, the Hyundai i10, the Chevrolet Beat and the Renault Kwid in the Indian market. The TML has not given any indications regarding the prices. The expected price tag is Rupees 4 to 5.5 lakh.
The Tiago will be the third Tata car with the ‘HORIZONEXT’ design language. The vehicle will have JLR design features, which come from their British, Italian and Indian studios. As per the promo video recently released, the Tiago will have one of the better exteriors than most of the Tata models. Based on the XO platform the car will have features like a piano black honeycomb grille, curvy headlamps, and large rounded rear bumper with chrome surrounded fog lamps and a character chrome line between the headlights. The prominent creases across the shoulder, mildly flared wheel arches, a rear spoiler and wraparound tail lamps are the other features of the body.
The cabin of the Tiago done in dual tone will feature a manual AC, power windows, electronic power steering, electrical ORVMs, rear defogger and washer and a Herman 8 speaker music system with eight speakers, Bluetooth connectivity, auxiliary-in and USB connectivity. The safety features include two air bags, ABS and EBD.
Under the hood
The Tiago is expected to be powered by 1.2 Revotron petrol engines with 84 bhp and 114 NM torque ratings. The diesel variants will have 1.05 litre, 64 bhp and 140 NM torque engines. The mileages expected are 18 to 19 kmpl in petrol and 25.0 kmpl in diesel.
The Tata Tiago is expected to be popular because of its competitive prices, design language and mileages. AMT variants will make it more attractive.
